Acupuncture and Chiropractic

Many people who utilize these modalities for their own health desire the same benefits for their fuzzy friend.  Acupuncture may be defined as the insertion of needles into specific points on the body to cause a desired healing effect.  It has been used to treat animals in China for over 3,000 years!  I most commonly use it to treat musculoskeletal disorders and neurological diseases, such as arthritis and intervertebral disc disease.  Acupuncture can be beneficial with managing skin issues, digestive problems, respiratory disorders and more.
Chiropractic adjustments are defined as a short lever, high velocity controlled thrust by hand or insturment that is directed at a specific articulation to correct vertebral subluxations (a spinal misalignment or joint dysfunction resulting in neurological or biomechanical dysfunction).  I most commonly use this modality to treat musculoskeletal disorders and neurological problems, but numerous internal medicine problems can be helped with chiropractic care.
I find that these two modalities work beautifully together and can improve the quality of life for our pets.  Most pets do well with the small acupuncture needles and adjustments, but pets that are aggressive or uncomfortable with strangers may not be the best candidates.
